The Principles Behind Every Visit
Mulch depth, not mulch mounds
Two to three inches of mulch holds moisture and blocks weeds. Piling it against trunks (“volcano mulching”) traps moisture on the bark and invites rot — keep it level and pull it back a few inches from stems.
Trim hedges before they crowd out neighbors
An overgrown hedge shades out and starves the plants beside it. Shape most hedges at least once a year; trim spring-flowering shrubs right after they bloom so you don’t cut off next year’s flowers.
When to cut back perennials
Most perennials can be cut back once frost has killed the foliage, or left standing for winter interest and cut back in late winter before new growth. Either way, a spring clean-up is where the beds get reset for the season.
